In his third decade as a veteran of the world-famous Austin music scene, Van Wilks “continues to make some of the city’s hottest guitar rock.”, says the Austin Chronicle, creating music that brings his blues roots to the cutting edge with funk, hard-rock and melodic undertones. His compelling, hard-edged, bluesy rock prompted England’s “Kerrang!” to name Van Wilks’ release, ‘Bombay Tears’, as “one of my all time faves,” declaring it “a masterpiece.”

His band, also known as Van Wilks, has topped music polls by the Austin Sun (Band of the Year), the Austin Chronicle (Best Hard-Rock Band four years in a row) and KLBJ-FM(Best Austin Band). Austin’s Mayor proclaimed November 6 as “Van Wilks Day” and the Texas Legislature presented him with the Texas flag and a plaque honoring his musical contributions to the State. The French magazine, Guitarist,  placed Van’s records in the editor’s top picks two years running.

Josh Smith is the son of Scott Smith, a bandmate of Van’s for over 40 years.  Quite an accomplished guitarist in his own right, Josh will accompany Van for the Jackson Ranch Concert.  Josh has played guitar with Van for nearly 20 years.  When playing together, Van and Josh sound like a gentle, smooth flowing water. An outstanding review of Van’s latest CD:  21st Century Blues…

Van Wilks
21st Century Blues (Texas ’51)
REVIEWED BY RAOUL HERNANDEZ, FRI., DEC. 25, 2015

Texas Platters
First, Austin guitar slinger emeritus Van Wilks n-a-i-l-s Billy Gibbons’ ranchero drawl on 21st Century Blues opener “Strange Girl,” fast broadside to ZZ Top’s “Rough Boy.” Then the Houston trio’s bearded icon himself voices “Drive By Lover,” a post-Eliminator-revving bauble built by the pair of stringbenders who once shared management. Blues polished to digital perfection don’t cease there. “Just Walk Away” sets a dusky ballad of steely strings and coyote lonesome early in a wily album sequence wherein rejoinder “There’s a Sin in There Somewhere” follows with locomotive slide chills. A fire pit smolder carpes diem throughout, notably on the aquatic ebb and glow of the title track and plaintive “If I Were a Richman.” Sammy Hagar’s “Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy” gains a cousin with “Can’t Stop Thinkin’.” Seventies or Eighties, 21st Century Blues would’ve stuck in your ride’s tape player.
